February Discourse Move of the Month: Advancing Student Thinking
What is it and why do we use it?
The move “advancing student thinking” is about asking questions that move students beyond their current thinking by pressing them to extend what they know to a new situation. Such questions are intended to support students in moving forward in solving the task and/or to explore the underlying mathematics more deeply. This move often follows last month’s move – assessing student thinking. Once you understand what a student is currently thinking, it is easier to pose a question to advance their thinking.
