This month’s Amplifying Voices Podcast focuses on “Rough Draft Math” and “Encouraging In Progress Thinking” in math education. Guests, Dr. Mandy Jansen and Emily Myers, emphasized the importance of fostering a collaborative and inclusive classroom environment where students feel empowered to share their evolving ideas and engage in continuous improvement through revision. Check it out!
This year we are revisiting the 9 important discourse moves that can be used in any content with any curricula. Why are we doing this? A focus on math discourse allows us to zero in on an important aspect of instruction that is proven to increase engagement in the mathematical practices, develop positive mathematics identities, address inequities in classroom participation, and improve mathematics achievement. We will highlight a different discourse move each month for us to try together!
September Discourse Move of the Month: Encouraging In-Progress Thinking
What is it? It’s about getting students to talk about their math problems and thoughts, even if they aren’t finished or perfect.
Why do we use it? This helps create a safe space where students feel that every idea matters and can be improved. It makes mistakes a part of learning and gets more students involved in talking about math with their classmates and teacher.
