This Amplifying Voices episode focuses on setting community agreements at the beginning of school so your classroom is ready for mathematical discourse. We welcome Dr. Geoff Krall, author of “Necessary Conditions” and Rob Leichner, Secondary Curriculum Math Specialist from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to have a conversation about setting up classroom culture to support mathematical discourse.
The discussion delved into the crucial topic of setting up norms in high school math classrooms at the beginning of the academic year. Geoff and Rob provided valuable insights on fostering mathematical discourse, creating an inclusive classroom environment, and encouraging active student participation. They emphasized the significance of engaging tasks like “Which One Doesn’t Belong,” “Number Talks,” and “Splat Math” to enrich discourse and ensure all students feel valued in discussions. Practical tips were shared to help educators establish a collaborative classroom culture where every student can contribute. Moreover, upcoming resources such as Geoff’s warm-up activities and Rob’s development of resources for classroom discussions were highlighted to assist teachers in enhancing math education. The discussion offered a comprehensive guide for educators on establishing norms, fostering discourse, and creating an inclusive classroom environment, accompanied by practical tips and upcoming resources to elevate math education.
